Reading Together
and We Both Read®
This workshop will motivate parents to get more involved in reading with their children and teach them skills they can use to maximize the benefits of reading together. It includes two sections, approximately 45-60 minutes each.
The first section of the workshop (which is also included as a standalone mini-workshop) covers best practices in reading together. Parents will learn why reading together is important, three styles of reading together (choral reading, echo reading, and shared reading), skills to use when reading to their child, and skills to use when their child is reading to them.
The second section of the workshop (which is also included as a standalone mini-workshop) covers books specifically designed for reading together, focusing primarily on use of the We Both Read series. This section includes information on how to maximize the benefits of using We Both Read and offers participants an opportunity to practice using the books.
Purchase of this CD-ROM includes a school-wide site license to modify and present the workshops.

Starting Off Right with
Phonemic Awareness
and Phonics
For presentations to parents, there are two mini-workshops included, one focusing on phonemic awareness and one focusing on phonics skills (Length: 1 to 2 hours each). A longer and more comprehensive version, combining both workshops (total 4-6 hours), is included for presentation to classroom teachers and teachers' aides.
The phonemic awareness presentation focuses on verbal games and activities parents can do to help prepare their children for reading. Parents will learn how to help their child develop the ability to hear, identify, segment, and blend the individual sounds in spoken words.
The phonics presentation focuses on the relationship between sounds and letters and how to blend letter sounds together to decode written words. Parents will learn simple games and activities they can do anytime with their child to reinforce phonics skills in reading.
Purchase of this CD-ROM includes a district-wide license to modify and present the included workshops.

Helping Your Child
Get Ready to Read
This workshop is designed to let parents know what they can do to help their children be better prepared for reading instruction. An ideal time to present this workshop is in the first half of kindergarten or before formal reading instruction begins.
The first section of the workshop focuses on reading to your child, as well as fun activities to do with your
child to help develop phonemic awareness. The workshop not only shows how important it is to read to your
child but also covers how parents can maximize the benefits for their child.
The second section of the workshop includes fun activities to help your child learn the names and sounds
of the letters in the alphabet. It also includes how parents can begin to introduce reading together activities,
even with children who are prereaders.
Each section of the workshop can be presented in about 30 minutes. Please note that much of the
material in this workshop is covered in the other two workshops above. However, this workshop is tailored
specifically to parents of prereaders.
Purchase of this CD-ROM includes a school-wide site license to modify and present the workshops.

Involving Parents in their Children’s Reading Development: A Guide For Teachers
Involving parents and making them partners in their children’s
reading development can make all the difference in helping students to
master reading and become avid readers. Involving Parents in their
Children’s Reading Development: A Guide for Teachers is full of
field-tested material that teachers can immediately use with parents of
children from preschool through middle school. Whether teachers are
reaching out through a parent-teacher conference, sending material
home to parents, or putting together a parent involvement workshop,
this book and CD set will provide everything they need—all in a format
that is easy for them to customize to meet the specific needs of their students and parents.
The book is written by Bruce Johnson, who has over 25 years of experience teaching reading to children from preschool through high school, as well as to college students and parents. He has designed and presented numerous workshops for parents on how they can help support their children’s reading development. His workshop material has formed the basis for many of the chapters in his book. Bruce holds a Master’s Degree in Reading Education and is currently a Reading Specialist with Merrimack Valley School District in New Hampshire.

questions and is presented in two formats. The “Print Format” is designed so you can simply select the quizzes you want and print them

Research Study Confirms
Significant Improvement in Fluency
An independent research study in four states recently
confirmed the effectiveness of the We Both Read series
in improving fluency and reading scores.
Among participants (reading at least
30 minutes per week with their parents), the use of the
We Both Read series resulted in significant
improvements on the DIBELS oral reading fluency score.
Versus other at-home reading materials, the We Both Read series
scored almost triple the increase in fluency improvement. The We Both Read series also
improved children's attitudes about reading
and resulted in more independent reading time. Plus,
100% of the teachers participating in the study reported a significant increase in at-home reading.

Print a Handout for Parents on “Reading Together with Your Child”
To help support parents and children reading together at home, our reading consultants have created a free handout flyer with helpful “Tips for Parents”. You may want to send this flyer home with a We Both Read book. However, since these tips are designed to support reading any book together, you may want to send the flyer home by itself to support parent involvement in reading. To open a PDF copy of the flyer (which you can print and copy), simply click here.
